bird alights on branch
mottled-lit golden leaves fall
drifting like feathers
light
Inner light
If you keep a sunny attitude, you will glow like a rainbow when life gets stormy.
Golden moments
i don’t care how rough a day i had
when i see the golden hour sunset
painting the trees with happy light
and feel a cool breeze on my face—
all is suddenly and magically reset
heart and mind cleared of burdens
—so the gratitude has a place to be
Lackluster
In the dark, glitter is nothing but sand.
Who Shall Measure?
From my highest hill
I watched for Antares.
Brief would be his glimmer
Where the long line of mountains
Duped the horizon
With vague, rambling mist.
And I shall never know
If that was Antares’
Eye on the earth-line,
Or the gleam of a lantern
The wild poet carried;
For God who saw both
Only laughs when I ask him.
—Olive Tilford Dargan (1869–1968), Lute and Furrow, 1922
The fall of October
October’s autumn
casts a gentle light
and a calm serenity
before the stark
barrenness of winter
is born to November
Watching the April bottlebrush without spectacles
green & light shimmering
dancing in the sunlight
little red fuzzy flames
burn quietly in the breeze
mottled blue patches
of serene springtime sky
blaze beautifully behind
a lively bejeweled scene
medallions of shade and color
twinkle in the afternoon
a mama hummingbird hovers
with wings so fast, silence
is no longer golden — she is
the sounds of the winds
overtake my soul and
carry it far off into the skies

leaves — lovers
of the gentle breeze
trees — brothers
of roots that weave
soil — giver
of life through earth
sun — mother
of golden light’s birth
Solar energy
The sun is nature’s antidepressant.
Sun-kissed
what more pleasant sensation
than sunshine on skin —
spirit and flesh drinking in
nature’s pure golden light
